The Loomis Town Council meeting on July 11, 2023, featured an engaging presentation by the UC Master Gardeners of Placer County, focusing on the development of a new demonstration garden at the Loomis Library. This initiative aims to transform a portion of the library's land into a vibrant space that promotes sustainable gardening practices and community education.
Karen Covey, representing the Master Gardeners, outlined the project's goals, which include removing 11,000 square feet of turf and replacing it with native and pollinator plants that are water-wise and suitable for the local environment. The garden will also feature an edible garden and a small orchard, with plans to donate the produce to local food banks. Covey emphasized the importance of making the garden accessible and inviting, with ADA compliance and interpretive signage to educate visitors about the various plants.
The project is a collaboration between the Master Gardeners and the town, initiated with a memorandum of understanding signed in February. Covey reported that the detailed design is complete, and the team is in the final stages of plant selection, aiming to begin planting in the fall. The project is expected to be completed within 4 to 6 weeks, minimizing disruption to library operations.
Additionally, the Master Gardeners are launching a "Buy a Brick" fundraising campaign, allowing community members to purchase commemorative bricks that will be installed at the garden's entrance. This initiative not only supports the garden but also strengthens community ties by honoring local residents and businesses.
The council expressed support for the project, recognizing its potential to enhance the library's offerings and provide educational opportunities for residents. As the demonstration garden takes shape, it promises to become a valuable resource for the Loomis community, fostering a greater appreciation for sustainable gardening and local ecology.
