The Loomis Town Council meeting on September 12, 2023, highlighted the impressive achievements of the Loomis Library and Community Learning Center over the past fiscal year. Library Director Sarah provided an annual report that showcased the library's growth and community engagement, emphasizing its role as a vital resource for residents.
During the fiscal year 2022-2023, the library added nearly 3,000 new items to its collection, which now totals over 15,000. The library saw a significant increase in circulation, with nearly 42,000 items checked out, reflecting a rebound from the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on library usage. The library also welcomed 860 new members, bringing the total number of active library cardholders to 2,228.
Sarah highlighted the library's diverse offerings beyond traditional books, including Chromebooks, hot spots, California State Parks passes, and a new program called ZipBooks, which allows patrons to request specific titles that the library does not currently have. This program, funded by a state library grant, aims to enhance accessibility and convenience for users.
Community partnerships were a focal point of the report, with collaborations established with local organizations such as the Placer County Mosquito and Vector Control, the historical society, and the South Placer Fire District. These partnerships have enriched the library's programming, which included over 195 events attended by more than 3,500 people.
Looking ahead, the library plans to continue fostering community connections and will soon break ground on a demonstration garden, which promises to be an exciting addition to its offerings. Additionally, the library aims to update its strategic plan to ensure it remains responsive to the needs of the community.
The meeting concluded with expressions of gratitude for the library's contributions to Loomis, as well as a warm farewell to retiring librarian Deborah, who was recognized for her years of service. The council and community members alike expressed their appreciation for the library's role in enhancing the quality of life in Loomis.
