Southview High School honors Jay Boulder and Brent Barker with new name approvals

The Cumberland County Schools Board of Education made significant strides in honoring local educators during their recent meeting on March 3, 2025. The board approved the naming of several facilities after distinguished individuals who have made lasting impacts on the community and its students.

One of the most notable decisions was to name the band room at Southview High School after Jay Boulder, a revered band director who began his career in the late 1980s. Boulder is celebrated for his dedication to student success and his ability to inspire young musicians. Under his leadership, the Southview band earned 41 superior ratings, and he was recognized with numerous accolades, including a Longleaf Pine award and a designated "Jay Boulder Day." Board members expressed deep respect and admiration for Boulder, highlighting the profound influence he had on countless students throughout his career.

In addition to the band room, the board also approved the naming of the basketball court at Southview High School after Brent Barker. Barker, who coached the girls' basketball team for 27 years, achieved an impressive record of 557 wins and led his team to a state championship in 2007. His commitment to the sport and his students was evident, as he was known for fostering a positive environment and mentoring young athletes both on and off the court.

Furthermore, the board considered naming the gymnasium at Spring Lake Middle School after Coach Leonard Bellamy, who has been a cornerstone of the school's athletic program since 1999. Bellamy's contributions extend beyond victories; he is recognized for cultivating a supportive school culture and mentoring students in their academic and athletic pursuits.
