City of Imperial seeks El Centro's support for SB 461 to secure CHP facility

The El Centro City Council meeting on March 4, 2025, focused on pressing public safety concerns and infrastructure needs in the region. Utilizing this facility would minimize renovation costs, as it includes essential infrastructure such as fuel storage, evidence lockers, and detention cells.

To facilitate this transfer, Senate Bill 461 is being proposed, which would allow the City of Imperial to acquire the CHP facility. This move is seen as a cost-effective solution to the police department's needs, potentially saving taxpayer dollars by avoiding the high costs associated with constructing a new facility or retrofitting another property.

The council was urged to support SB 461, which would not only address the immediate needs of the Imperial Police Department but also allow the city to allocate resources to other priorities, such as housing development and essential services. The meeting concluded with a call for collaboration between neighboring cities to enhance public safety infrastructure.
