Concerns over water quality took center stage at the Summit County Board of Health meeting on August 7, 2023, as alarming reports emerged regarding high levels of sewage pollutants in irrigation water from the Weber River drainage area. Board members discussed two recent water samples taken from an irrigation pipe, revealing significant contamination that poses health risks to local farmers and their families.
One board member highlighted that the lower irrigation company, situated downstream from Oakley City's sewer line, has been experiencing troubling levels of pollutants. "You wouldn’t want to eat your sandwich and pull and change sprinkler lines at the same time," he stated, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation. He also noted that two farmers have suffered severe leg infections, requiring hospitalization and surgery, after coming into contact with the contaminated water.
The board acknowledged that this was the first report of such contamination, and discussions ensued about involving the state Department of Environmental Quality and local authorities to investigate further. "We can definitely ask her," a board member said, referring to the need for environmental health teams to assess the situation.
In addition to the water quality concerns, the board briefly discussed upcoming meetings and training reminders, with the next meeting scheduled for September 11, 2023. They also expressed interest in receiving updates on tick and mosquito-borne diseases as summer draws to a close.
The meeting underscored the urgent need for action regarding water safety in the region, as officials prepare to address the potential public health crisis stemming from the contaminated irrigation water.
