Middletown Township is taking significant steps toward renewable energy and cost savings by exploring solar energy options at multiple township-owned properties. During the Board of Supervisors meeting on October 16, 2023, officials discussed a solar feasibility study conducted by Exact Solar, which identified eight potential locations for solar arrays aimed at offsetting the township's energy consumption.
Key sites under consideration include the municipal center, where a larger solar array could be installed, and the Public Works Administration Building, which may require roof repairs before proceeding. Other locations include the Senior Center, North Fire Station, and various structures at the Styers property. Notably, the feasibility study highlighted that some properties would need coordination with tenants to manage utility bills effectively.
The projected payoff for these solar installations is approximately 11 years, after which the township expects to see significant savings on energy costs. The concept of virtual meter aggregation was also introduced, allowing the township to offset energy consumption across multiple properties within a two-mile radius, enhancing the overall efficiency of the solar initiative.
To fund these projects, the township is considering utilizing a $76,530 allocation from the federal Department of Energy, designated for energy efficiency and conservation projects. One proposed funding mechanism is a power purchase agreement, which would enable a third-party vendor to install and operate the solar panels while the township buys back the energy produced at a favorable rate.
This initiative not only aims to transition Middletown Township toward renewable energy but also seeks to reduce long-term operating costs, marking a proactive approach to sustainability and fiscal responsibility. The board's discussions signal a commitment to enhancing the township's energy infrastructure while promoting environmental stewardship.
