Dream Center of Lakeland expands facilities including new restrooms and mercantile building

The City of Lakeland Planning and Zoning Board has approved a major modification to the conditional use permit for the Dream Center of Lakeland, allowing for the inclusion of five adjacent properties to enhance community outreach efforts. This decision, made during the board's meeting on January 22, 2025, is expected to significantly improve the services offered by the Dream Center, located at 635 West Fifth Street.

The modification will facilitate the construction of new facilities, including restrooms and showers, to better serve the community during food distribution events, which attract over 300 individuals weekly. The existing community garden will be relocated to accommodate these new structures. Additionally, the Dream Center plans to expand its mercantile building, which is currently in the permitting stage.

The approved parcels, totaling approximately 0.47 acres, will also include areas designated for roll-off dumpsters, which are essential for community clean-up efforts. However, concerns were raised regarding the positioning of these dumpsters and their visibility from the street. The board discussed the need for buffering to minimize their impact on the surrounding residential area.

Mike Cooper, the executive director of the Dream Center, emphasized the organization's commitment to community service and collaboration with city officials. He highlighted the importance of maintaining relationships with local residents and addressing their needs, particularly in light of the ongoing outreach programs.

The board did not receive any public comments or opposition regarding the project, indicating strong community support for the Dream Center's initiatives. As the Dream Center moves forward with its expansion plans, the city will continue to work closely with the organization to ensure that the modifications align with community standards and enhance the overall quality of life in the area.
