Newport Council approves parking plan for Jazz Festival at Fort Adams State Park

Newport City Council has taken significant steps to enhance community engagement and address logistical challenges surrounding the Newport Jazz Festival, which will take place from August 1 to August 3, 2025. During the regular meeting on January 8, 2025, council members discussed the festival's growing popularity and the need for an effective parking and transportation plan to accommodate the influx of visitors.

In response to concerns about traffic and parking at Fort Adams State Park, where the festival is held, the council is developing an ancillary parking plan that includes free shuttle services. This initiative aims to alleviate congestion and ensure that residents and festival-goers can navigate the area more easily. Council members emphasized the importance of proactive planning, urging that a comprehensive strategy be presented before permits are granted for future events.

Additionally, the council acknowledged the contributions of local organizations, including the Newport Police Department and Bike Newport, for their efforts in promoting alternative transportation methods, such as biking and water taxis, during last year's festival. These initiatives were well-received and are expected to continue as part of the festival's planning.

In other matters, the council accepted resignations from several committee members and approved various business licenses, including a renewal for a local pedicab service and a new license for a Tropical Smoothie Café. The meeting also featured the appointment of Kenneth Smith to the Energy and Environment Commission and the naming of the Newport Skatepark in memory of Seamus Kirby, a beloved community member known for his dedication to skateboarding and fostering inclusivity.
