DeKalb County completes Navaids Relocation Project as new taxiway extension nears start

The DeKalb County Council convened on December 11, 2024, to discuss several key updates and projects impacting the local community. The meeting began with a brief acknowledgment of the council's current staffing situation, confirming that the team is now fully staffed.

Randy Fox provided a report on two significant items. First, he announced the completion of the Navaids Relocation Project, which had faced delays due to weather conditions that canceled a scheduled flight test. The rescheduled test is expected to occur soon, with results anticipated at the next meeting. Successful completion will allow for the publication of new electronic precision approaches, enhancing the airport's operational capabilities and reducing the need for tenants to divert to other airports during adverse weather.

Fox also reported on the recent purchase of three new pieces of equipment for runway clearing, which will help maintain the 7,205 feet of runway. He emphasized the importance of this equipment for safely accommodating aircraft landing at higher speeds, noting that the new machinery will not replace older equipment but will complement it. However, he cautioned that there is a significant lead time of 14 to 16 months for delivery, with the new equipment expected to arrive by spring 2026.

Additionally, Fox mentioned ongoing plans for a taxiway extension, which is set to begin excavation around April. This project will allow aircraft to taxi the full length of the runway without needing to backtrack, improving efficiency and safety. New lighting and signage will also be installed to align with standards at other airports.

The meeting concluded with an open floor for questions, where council members discussed the procurement process for the new equipment, emphasizing the importance of local sourcing for service and warranty support.
