Author explores Hank Mason's forgotten bear story in Wyoming history book

A captivating piece of Weston County history is set to resurface as local historian Hank Mason's story is revived through a new book detailing his legendary encounter with a bear in the 1890s. During a recent meeting on March 9, 2025, the Weston County Museum District showcased an oral history presentation that highlighted the significance of Mason's tale, which has faded from public memory over the years.

The presentation, led by a passionate local historian, emphasized the importance of preserving Hank Mason's story, which has been largely forgotten since it was first documented in 1959 by Frank Fawcett. Fawcett, who was just ten years old at the time of Mason's bear attack, became the caretaker of this local legend, sharing it through his writings. The historian expressed excitement about uncovering new information about Mason, stating, "I found a slew of information that I don't think anybody had ever been aware of until now."

The book, which has been in the works since 2020, aims to compile all known facts about Mason and his infamous encounter. The historian encouraged community members to support local sales, noting that the book will be available in town soon, offering a more affordable option than online purchases.

The presentation also included a historical marker that once stood near the LAK Ranch, which read, "Hank Mason killed by a bear 1893." This marker sparked interest in Mason's story among locals, particularly those who grew up reading about it during family road trips. The historian shared personal anecdotes from his childhood, recalling how he first learned about Mason's tale through a school project in 1988.
