Summit County's Board of Health has announced a streamlined approach to monitoring respiratory illnesses as the region transitions out of the flu, RSV, and COVID-19 seasons. During their April 3, 2023 meeting, health officials presented a revised dashboard that will focus on COVID-19, influenza, and RSV data, reflecting a significant decrease in cases this season compared to previous years.
Nancy Davis, a representative from the health department, explained that the updated dashboard will provide a clearer view of disease severity and seasonal trends, with data sourced exclusively from state reports on PCR tests. The dashboard will be updated monthly, with weekly monitoring to identify any unexpected spikes in cases, particularly as the community approaches the summer months.
Davis emphasized the importance of communication strategies to keep the public informed about potential health risks, including those related to flooding and associated diseases. The board discussed the unusually high flu season experienced this past winter, attributing it to a resurgence of illnesses as COVID-19 precautions were lifted.
The board's proactive measures aim to ensure that residents remain informed and prepared for any changes in public health trends. As the health department continues to monitor respiratory illnesses, officials are committed to adapting their communication strategies to effectively address community needs.
