Polk County is stepping up its public safety measures with the introduction of a new cell check system, the Guardian system, designed to enhance accountability in corrections. During the Public Safety & Public Works Meeting on November 5, 2024, officials highlighted the system's ability to alert corrections officers when cell checks are overdue, replacing an outdated method that lacked efficiency. This upgrade comes as a recommendation from the state Department of Corrections following annual inspections, marking a significant move towards modernizing safety protocols.
Sheriff's office representatives reported a current fatality count of eight, a notable decrease from 16 the previous year, indicating progress in safety measures. The meeting also touched on budget preparations, with Administrator Norby confirming that staff are finalizing plans for upcoming bonding and library committee appointments.
In addition to safety updates, discussions included the need for bridge repairs in St. Croix Falls, particularly concerning a bridge that is currently rated for only 9,000 pounds, which is insufficient for the larger equipment used by local clubs. The future of another bridge was also debated, with options to either raise or remove it being considered due to ongoing issues with over-height vehicles.
As Polk County continues to address these critical infrastructure and safety challenges, further updates are expected in the coming months, particularly regarding the bridges and the implementation of the new Guardian system.
