Aspirus proposes mobile clinic to improve prenatal care in Waupaca County

In a recent meeting at Waupaca City Hall, city officials and healthcare advocates gathered to address a pressing issue: the lack of accessible prenatal care in Waupaca County. With the nearest hospitals located over 35 minutes away, many expectant mothers face long drives for essential medical appointments, often exceeding an hour. This situation not only strains families but also adds unnecessary mileage to their vehicles due to frequent visits.

To combat this challenge, the council proposed an innovative solution: a mobile clinic dedicated to prenatal care. Drawing inspiration from successful models in other rural communities, the plan aims to convert an RV into a fully equipped healthcare facility. The initiative seeks to partner with Aspirus, a healthcare provider with multiple clinics in the area, to staff the mobile unit with qualified doctors and nurses.

The ambitious project is estimated to cost around $500,000, which includes renovations and medical equipment. To manage expenses, the council is exploring options such as collaborating with Rawhide Youth Services, which refurbishes vehicles for auction. This partnership could provide a more affordable avenue for acquiring the necessary RV.

Looking ahead, the mobile clinic's vision extends beyond prenatal care. Plans are in place to eventually offer a range of medical services, including pediatric, dental, and mental health care. The need for mental health services is particularly acute, with some residents waiting over four months for appointments. The proposed mental health RV would complement the prenatal clinic, addressing another critical gap in healthcare access.

As the council moves forward with this initiative, the hope is to not only improve healthcare accessibility for Waupaca County residents but also to foster partnerships with neighboring counties, enhancing the overall health and well-being of the community.
