Thermo Fisher unveils new wastewater treatment plant plans near Fresenius Kabi

The Grand Island Planning Board convened on March 10, 2025, to discuss significant developments regarding Thermo Fisher's new wastewater treatment plant, a project poised to enhance environmental standards and operational efficiency in the community.

Tim Walk, representing Glendale, presented plans for the new facility, which will replace the existing treatment system that has been deemed inadequate under stricter regulations set by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). The new plant aims to discharge cleaner water, addressing both current and anticipated future wastewater flows from Thermo Fisher's operations.

The proposed facility will be constructed adjacent to the existing plant, which must remain operational during the transition. The new system will eliminate the need for large open lagoons, replacing them with a more compact and efficient design that includes advanced treatment technologies. This shift is expected to significantly reduce environmental impact while meeting the enhanced discharge standards mandated by the DEC.

Key features of the new plant include a mechanical bar screen for debris removal, a series of batch reactor tanks for wastewater treatment, and an upgraded ultraviolet disinfection system. The construction will be phased, with the first phase focusing on two reactor tanks, with plans for a third tank to be added as needed.
