UND President discusses AI integration in higher education and campus collaboration

The North Dakota State Legislature's House Appropriations Committee on Education and Environment convened on March 10, 2025, to discuss the critical role of higher education in preparing students for a technology-driven future, particularly in the realm of artificial intelligence (AI).

During the meeting, university leaders emphasized the importance of integrating diverse academic disciplines, such as engineering and humanities, to foster a comprehensive understanding of AI's impact on society. They highlighted that institutions like the University of North Dakota (UND) are uniquely positioned to facilitate this interdisciplinary approach, ensuring that ethical considerations and critical thinking remain central to education.

President Armijo noted that higher education can serve as a moderating force amid the rapid development of AI technologies. By promoting collective discussion and discovery, universities can help both industry and students navigate emerging trends and make informed decisions about the future.

A significant portion of the work involves collaboration among faculty, staff, and students to explore AI applications in educational settings and campus operations. A pilot study utilizing Microsoft CoPilot aims to harness innovative uses of AI, demonstrating a commitment to learning and adaptation within the academic community.

Furthermore, the discussion revealed that while external vendors are providing solutions, the university is prioritizing internal collaboration to maximize the benefits of new technologies. This approach is part of a broader strategy to ensure that all 11 campuses within the university system share insights and best practices regarding AI advancements.
