Northbrook residents will soon have the opportunity to participate in a new composting program aimed at reducing waste and promoting environmental sustainability. During the Village Board of Trustees meeting on March 11, 2025, officials announced that composting services will begin in May, with carts delivered to homes in April. The 35-gallon carts, featuring yellow lids, will allow residents to recycle organic materials such as food scraps and yard waste into compost, a natural fertilizer that enhances soil health.
The first compost pickup is scheduled for May 7, with weekly collections during warmer months and bi-weekly pickups in winter. Residents can also use BPI-certified compostable bags for their organic waste, addressing previous concerns about disposal methods. This initiative aligns with Northbrook's climate action plan, which aims to minimize landfill waste and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
