St. Pete Beach officials are taking significant steps to enhance community recovery efforts following recent hurricane damage, as highlighted in the City Commission meeting on March 10, 2025. A key focus of the meeting was the introduction of new Finance Director Devin Schmidt, who will play a crucial role in implementing financial strategies to support recovery initiatives.

Commissioner Robinson proposed extending the first reading of the beach ordinance to allow more time for staff to finalize details and negotiate terms, aiming for readiness by the upcoming turtle season on May 1. This extension reflects the city’s commitment to balancing environmental protection with community needs.

Laura Canary from the Community Development Department provided updates on the ongoing recovery efforts, including the permitting process and inspections related to hurricane damage. To date, 3,200 assessments have been conducted, with 1,487 properties deemed non-substantially damaged and 815 substantially damaged. The city has approved 541 appeals, with no denials reported, indicating a proactive approach to addressing community concerns.

The meeting also addressed the importance of clear communication with residents regarding inspections. Concerns were raised about inspectors visiting homes, prompting discussions on how to better inform the public about the purpose of these visits and ensure residents feel safe and informed.

In addition, the city is launching the Elevate Florida program, which has already received 4,600 applications for various recovery-related assistance, including structural elevation and wind mitigation. Workshops are being held to educate residents about available resources.

As St. Pete Beach continues to navigate the recovery process, city officials are focused on transparency and community engagement, ensuring that residents are informed and supported as they rebuild.
