In a recent media briefing held on March 10, 2025, Montgomery Mayor Steven L. Reed announced a new initiative aimed at enhancing community safety and fostering closer ties between law enforcement and residents. The program, known as the Community Home Buyer Loan Program, is designed specifically for members of the Montgomery Police Department, allowing them to purchase homes with no down payment and no mortgage insurance.
Mayor Reed emphasized the importance of homeownership for police officers, stating that it not only benefits the officers but also strengthens the neighborhoods they serve. By encouraging officers to live in the communities they patrol, the initiative aims to build trust and transparency between law enforcement and residents. Reed highlighted the city’s commitment to investing in its police department, noting significant increases in salaries and benefits over the past five years, as well as substantial investments in equipment and technology.

Subscribe for Free Councilman Andrew Zemansky, who played a key role in developing the program in partnership with Renasant Bank, expressed optimism about the initiative's potential to attract more officers to Montgomery. He noted that the program could serve as a model for extending similar benefits to other first responders, including firefighters, 911 operators, teachers, and nurses.
Chief Grama Boyce of the Montgomery Police Department also praised the initiative, stating that it would help officers integrate more fully into their communities. He acknowledged that financial barriers had previously made it difficult for officers to live in the neighborhoods they serve, and this program would help bridge that gap.
The briefing concluded with a call for community engagement, as both the mayor and police chief encouraged residents to welcome officers into their neighborhoods. The initiative represents a significant step towards creating a safer and more connected Montgomery, where law enforcement and community members work together to enhance public safety and quality of life.
