Lock Haven City Council celebrated a significant boost to local firefighting capabilities during their recent meeting on July 10, 2023. The highlight of the session was the announcement of a successful grant acquisition that provided the city with 47 new air packs and spare cylinders, valued at approximately $400,000, without any cost to taxpayers.
The funding came through the Assisted Firefighters Grant Program, with Lock Haven joining forces with seven other companies in the county to submit a regional grant. This collaborative effort resulted in nearly $1 million in total funding for equipment upgrades across all participating fire departments. Chief Nuntz expressed gratitude for the support, noting that the new air packs have already been put to use in multiple fire incidents since their arrival just five weeks ago.
The chief emphasized the importance of this grant, which transformed what could have been a $400,000 loan into a mere $30,000 expense for the city, thanks to a 5% matching grant provided by the council. He also acknowledged the role of Dunstable, which took on the financial management of the grant, easing the burden on the city.
This upgrade marks a significant improvement for the fire department, replacing outdated equipment that had been in service for 15 years. The council's support for this initiative not only enhances safety for firefighters but also demonstrates a commitment to investing in community resources. As the city moves forward, the positive impact of this grant is expected to resonate throughout the community, ensuring better preparedness for future emergencies.
