Cedar Rapids Community School District has announced significant updates in its latest newsletter, highlighting leadership changes, student achievements, and upcoming opportunities for the community.
Effective July 1, 2025, Josiah Gilchrist will take over as the new principal of Taft Middle School, succeeding Gary Hatfield, who is retiring after 33 years of dedicated service. Gilchrist, a familiar face in the Taft community with 16 years of experience, including his recent role as assistant principal, is expected to uphold the school's tradition of excellence and enhance student achievement.

Subscribe for Free In recognition of outstanding teaching, Chuck Tonelli from Metro Alternative High School has been awarded the 2025 Iowa STEM Teacher Award. With two decades of experience, Tonelli has transformed education through project-based learning and has established partnerships with over 100 community organizations, equipping students with essential career-ready skills.
The district also celebrated young leaders through the CRCSD 14 Under 14 award, honoring students who demonstrate leadership, kindness, and resilience. This year’s recipients were selected from 70 nominations, showcasing the impactful contributions of youth in the community.
Additionally, students from the district have been recognized for their artistic talents, with several selected for the Gazette's 2025 Excellence in the Arts event on March 9. Notable honorees include Annabel Spangler and Mason Davidson Ware from Kennedy and Washington High Schools, respectively.
As scholarship season is underway, the Cedar Rapids Community Schools Foundation is offering various local scholarships, including the Candace Lynch Future Ready Leader Scholarship, which provides $500 to eligible graduates. Applications are due by April 1.
For families seeking summer enrichment, the district will host a summer camp at Harding Middle School in June, featuring classes in coding, engineering, and more for students in grades 3 to 5. Registration is encouraged as spots are limited.
Lastly, Linn County Public Health will provide mobile vaccine clinics at local middle and high schools this spring, ensuring students receive necessary vaccinations conveniently.
