Bowie State University accelerates Thurgood Marshall Library project to 2026 funding schedule

Bowie State University is set to receive a significant boost in funding for its Thurgood Marshall Library Academic Commons project, with the Maryland General Assembly's Appropriations Committee approving approximately $2.2 million in gold bonds for fiscal year 2026. This funding marks a crucial step in a project that has seen its total cost rise to $251 million, an increase of $51 million from previous estimates.

The project, initially scheduled to begin in fiscal year 2027, has been expedited to fiscal year 2026, with design work expected to kick off in October following procurement starting in April. Despite the earlier design timeline, construction is still projected to commence in fiscal year 2029, with a 30-month construction period anticipated, extending from the previously estimated 24 months.

During the meeting, Ms. Kelly Norton presented the details, highlighting the importance of modern facilities to enhance learning and research capabilities at Bowie State University. The committee expressed gratitude for the governor's support and the legislature's commitment to advancing educational infrastructure.
