Kerr County approves UGRA River Cleanup at Flat Rock Park for 2025

Kerr County Commissioners have taken significant steps to enhance community engagement and environmental stewardship during their recent meeting on March 10, 2025. The court unanimously approved a request from the Upper Guadalupe River Authority (UGRA) to utilize Flat Rock Park for the annual UGRA River Cleanup scheduled for July 26, 2025. This event, now in its thirteenth year, aims to mobilize volunteers to clean up the river and surrounding areas, fostering community spirit and environmental awareness. Last year, despite challenges posed by flooding, 373 volunteers collected over 4,000 pounds of trash, showcasing the event's impact.

In addition to the cleanup initiative, the court also authorized Texas Parks and Wildlife Department contractors to manage the invasive species Arundo donax, commonly known as giant cane, on Kerr County property. This ongoing effort is part of the Healthy Creeks initiative, which aims to control invasive plant species that threaten local ecosystems. While some concerns were raised about the effectiveness of the spraying program, officials noted that it has successfully reduced the size of certain invasive patches.

The meeting also highlighted community events, including a request from the Texas Hill Country Nurses Honor Guard to use the courthouse grounds on May 3 to honor nurses in the community. This event will feature a ceremony and the distribution of wildflower seeds, symbolizing tribute to nurses past and present.

Furthermore, the court approved a resolution to support the Meals on Wheels program, emphasizing the importance of local government sponsorship for federal funding eligibility. This initiative celebrates 53 years of the Older Americans Act Nutrition program, underscoring the county's commitment to supporting its senior citizens.

As the meeting progressed, the court addressed routine matters, including the approval of a contract for the Bear Creek Road reclamation project, which aims to improve local infrastructure. The project is budgeted at $650,000, with the lowest bid coming in at $488,454.25, ensuring that essential road improvements will proceed.
