Mary Mora leads educational justice initiatives in Rockland County schools

Mary Mora, originally from Tucson, Ecuador, embodies the spirit of community service and educational advocacy. Her journey began when she moved to the United States at 18, driven by a desire to support her family, particularly her younger sister's education. As the first in her family to pursue the American dream, Mary has consistently demonstrated a commitment to helping others.

Her passion for education and community involvement was ignited when her daughter entered the public school system in the East Ramapo Central School District. Witnessing the challenges faced by children in the district, Mary took action to improve their circumstances. Her efforts were recognized when she was named the most influential parent at Hempstead Elementary School and the ECC in 2021 and 2022, thanks to her work with the stop payment support program, where she provided translations and assistance.

Currently serving as the president of the PTA at Margettes Elementary School, Mary aims to inspire other parents to engage more actively with teachers and the PTA, fostering a legacy of involvement for future generations. Her leadership extends beyond the school, as she is an original member of Project Lighthouse, advocating for educational justice alongside local organizations such as the New York Civil Liberties Union and the NAACP.

Mary's dedication to improving public schools stems from her belief in collective responsibility. She emphasizes that regardless of one's background, everyone has a role in supporting one another as human beings. Through her tireless efforts, Mary Mora is making a significant impact on the educational landscape for future generations in her community.
