District officials address emergency roof repairs amid weather-related leaks in multiple schools

Concerns over aging school roofs took center stage at the BPSD Live School Board meeting on March 11, 2025, as officials addressed significant leaks affecting several district buildings. Dr. Kosinski provided an update on the emergency repairs initiated after a harsh winter led to an increase in roof damage due to freeze-thaw cycles.

"More than usual, our buildings are aging, and three of them suffered the consequences," Dr. Kosinski explained, detailing the swift response from the emergency repair team. Despite challenges posed by weather conditions, work has commenced at various sites, including IMS and Franklin, where safety measures are being implemented to facilitate repairs.

The IMS roof will undergo a complete replacement, with a temporary roof being installed over the gymnasium to minimize disruption to school activities. Repairs at Franklin and NAMS are set to follow, contingent on weather conditions and the removal of gravel from the roofs.

In addition to roof repairs, air quality tests are being conducted across all affected buildings to ensure a safe environment for students and staff. Dr. Kosinski reassured the board that inspections by professional organizations confirmed that discoloration on ceilings was not a health hazard.

The meeting also highlighted positive community engagement, with new library cards for students in grades 7 through 12 being distributed soon, reflecting increased usage of local resources. As the district navigates these repairs, officials remain optimistic about improving conditions for students and staff alike.
