During the Newport City Council meeting on May 8, 2024, community collaboration took center stage as officials recognized key contributors to the Southern Aquidneck Island Overnight Warming Center Hub Project. Fire Chief Hart Donnelly highlighted the initiative's success in providing shelter for the homeless during the harsh winter months, thanks to a partnership with local organizations and a state grant that funded 75 nights of operation.
The project, which ran from Thanksgiving to mid-March, involved significant contributions from various community partners, including the Doctor Martin Luther King Center, Newport County Mental Health, and local churches. Chief Donnelly praised the efforts of these organizations, particularly Father Kevin Beasley of St. John the Evangelist Church, who opened his doors to those in need, and Heather Stroud from the MLK Center, which took over operations after renovations.
In addition to the warming center recognition, the council presented a certificate of recognition to Kelly McKenna of the Newport Public Library for her outstanding service, marking her 38 years of dedication to the community. The meeting also acknowledged city staff members who received awards from the Rhode Island American Planning Association for their exemplary planning efforts.
This gathering underscored Newport's commitment to grassroots solutions and community support, showcasing how local leaders and organizations can come together to address pressing social issues. As the city looks ahead, the collaborative spirit demonstrated in this initiative sets a positive precedent for future community-driven projects.
