Topeka promotes passenger air service through Get There From Here initiative

Topeka is on the brink of revitalizing its air travel options, with city officials announcing an ambitious initiative to restore passenger air service. During the City Council meeting on March 11, 2025, leaders expressed excitement about the "Get There From Here" initiative, aimed at attracting airlines to operate routes from Topeka to popular destinations like Phoenix, Orlando, and Las Vegas.

City representatives highlighted that hundreds of residents currently drive to Kansas City for flights, indicating a strong demand for local air service. "We have data that shows Topekans are ready to fill planes if airlines establish routes here," one official stated, emphasizing the potential for success this time around.

The council discussed lessons learned from past attempts at commercial air service, noting that the landscape has changed significantly. Unlike previous efforts, which relied on routes to Chicago, the current strategy focuses on point-to-point carriers that are expanding their networks. Officials believe that the geographic location of Topeka, combined with rising operational costs at Kansas City International Airport, creates a unique opportunity for airlines to offer competitive fares from Topeka.

Council members also stressed the importance of engaging local businesses and institutions, such as Washburn University, to support the initiative. "We need to ensure our corporate community understands the advantages of flying from Topeka," one council member remarked, pointing out that having air service could attract more conventions and events to the city.

As the city moves forward, a revenue guarantee model is being considered to entice airlines, ensuring they have a stable income from the routes. A consultant has been brought on board to assist with this process, aiming to create a compelling case for airlines to invest in Topeka.

The council's discussions signal a renewed commitment to enhancing transportation options for residents, with hopes that the return of passenger air service will not only ease travel but also boost the local economy.
