In a significant move to enhance school safety, the Clearlake City Council has approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Kanaka Unified School District to assign a full-time School Resource Officer (SRO) for the upcoming 2023-2024 school year. This decision comes after a gap since October 2020, when the district last had a dedicated officer.
The MOU outlines that the school district will contribute $142,956 to cover the costs associated with the SRO, which includes salary, benefits, overtime, training, and vehicle expenses. This partnership aims to bolster security within the nine schools located in Clearlake, Clearlake Oaks, and Lower Lake, providing a safer environment for students and staff.
The presence of a full-time SRO is expected to not only enhance safety but also foster a positive relationship between law enforcement and the school community. During the meeting, council members expressed strong support for the initiative, highlighting its importance in helping students learn effectively while ensuring families feel secure.
The council unanimously passed the motion to authorize the city manager to execute the MOU, signaling a collaborative effort between the city and the school district to prioritize the well-being of local students. This initiative reflects a broader commitment to community safety and support, addressing the needs of families in the Clearlake area.
