Advocates urge funding for ANSIP Acceleration Academy in Anchorage

In a recent meeting of the Alaska Legislature's House Finance Committee, discussions highlighted the critical need for continued funding of the Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program (ANSEP) Acceleration Academy. Advocates, including parents and students, emphasized the program's significant impact on education and workforce development in the state.

One prominent supporter, an engineer from Anchorage, shared his personal experience with the ANSEP program, which he believes has been instrumental in preparing his children for future success. He noted that his son, a junior at the academy, has already earned over 120 college credits, while his daughter is on track to accumulate 50 credits by the end of the semester. The parent argued that ANSEP not only saves the state millions in educational costs by dual-enrolling high school and college students but also helps attract skilled professionals to Alaska, fostering a robust internal workforce.

Eighteen-year-old Steven Spangler, a current ANSEP student, echoed these sentiments. He expressed his desire for the program to remain available for future generations, including his younger sister. Spangler highlighted the benefits of the program in reducing college costs and teaching essential skills like time management and study habits, which are crucial for success in higher education.

The meeting also featured testimony from Amy Simpson, Executive Director of Programs for Infants and Children, who has dedicated 30 years to early childhood education in the Anchorage area.
