Springfield plans multifamily apartments and retail for historic building renovation

The Springfield City Commission meeting on March 11, 2025, highlighted an exciting redevelopment project that aims to breathe new life into a historic building downtown. Commissioners expressed gratitude for the preservation efforts, with plans for the structure to feature approximately 80 to 90 multifamily apartments on the upper floors, complemented by retail spaces along Main Street and Pound Street.

"We’re going to dig into that and figure out what shouldn’t be there," the architect stated, indicating a thorough examination of the building's layers and historical significance. In addition to the redevelopment discussion, the meeting also touched on the successful Motor Owned Program, which has reclaimed 222 vacant properties since its inception in 2016. This initiative continues to strengthen neighborhoods by returning these properties to responsible ownership.
