WF West celebrates state champions Tucker Land and Kaylee Lamon during recognition event

Lewis County celebrated a remarkable achievement at the recent Board of County Commissioners meeting, honoring local high school athletes who brought home state championships. The spotlight shone brightly on the WF West High School girls wrestling team and standout wrestler Tucker Land, who both showcased exceptional talent and determination.

Commissioners expressed their pride in the athletes, with one official highlighting the bright future of the community, thanks to these young champions. "Congratulations to all of you," the commissioner said, commending the team's hard work and unity that led to their success.

Coach Serena Sholkoff, who has dedicated 17 years to the program, shared her pride in the girls' accomplishment, marking their first traditional state championship. "The girls worked really hard, and I'm so proud of them for being one strong unit," she stated.

Tucker Land, a senior and state champion wrestler, reflected on his journey in the sport, which began at age four. "It was a great experience... it's really life-changing," he said, revealing his plans to pursue kinesiology and a career in sports medicine while continuing to compete at the collegiate level.

Kaylee Lamon, another state champion, made history as the first girl from WF West to place at the state championship. "I'm really proud of myself that I was able to accomplish that," she shared, emphasizing the importance of believing in oneself.

The meeting also recognized the academic achievements of the wrestling team, which boasted an impressive average GPA of 3.77, showcasing that their success extends beyond the mat. Coaches and teammates celebrated the spirit of excellence and mentorship within the team, highlighting the positive influence these athletes have on younger students.
