In a vibrant gathering at the Orange County Board of Supervisors' Regular Meeting on October 22, 2024, the atmosphere buzzed with excitement as the county celebrated its achievements in the prestigious Achievement Awards program. This year, a record 145 entries were submitted from 32 counties, showcasing the competitive spirit of local governments. Only 45 winners emerged, highlighting the rigorous selection process where just 31% of entries were honored.
Orange County, with its impressive history in the program, has claimed the Achievement Awards seven times, including the coveted best small county achievement award in 2022 and the overall best achievement award in 2013. The recognition reflects the county's commitment to innovative solutions and exemplary service delivery.
During the meeting, two standout programs were recognized: the Facility Maintenance Staff Education Program and the Plastic Film Recycling initiative. Stephanie, a representative from the county, took the floor to elaborate on these initiatives. She expressed gratitude to the volunteers of the Litter Control Committee for their role in the plastic film recycling project, which began two fiscal years ago. This initiative addresses the challenge of recycling plastic bags, which are not accepted at local facilities. By partnering with Trex, the county has established collection boxes throughout the area, successfully gathering over 1,200 pounds of plastic bags. For every 500 pounds collected, the county receives a bench, with two already placed at the animal shelter and plans for more in local parks.
Additionally, the Facility Maintenance Staff Education Program, developed in collaboration with Germanna Community College, provides essential training in HVAC, carpentry, electrical work, and plumbing. This program not only benefits county staff but also invites community members to participate, fostering a collaborative learning environment.
As the meeting drew to a close, the board members and attendees applauded the hard work and dedication of those involved in these programs. The recognition of Orange County's efforts serves as a reminder of the positive impact local initiatives can have on the community, inspiring others to follow suit. With a commitment to innovation and collaboration, Orange County continues to set a high standard for local governance and community service.
