Planning Commission addresses traffic concerns over new Walmart development in Lakewood

Concerns about traffic and safety dominated the Provo City Planning Commission meeting on March 12, 2025, as residents voiced their apprehensions regarding the proposed Walmart Superstore development. Many noted that 500 West is already a busy two-lane road, and the addition of a high-traffic retail store could exacerbate existing safety issues. Concerns were raised about the speed of vehicles on this road, which is often exceeded, posing risks to children and pedestrians. The intersection of 500 West and Lakeview Parkway was specifically mentioned as a potential bottleneck, with fears that it could lead to dangerous conditions for residents trying to navigate the area.

Public comments included suggestions for additional traffic signals and improved pedestrian access. One resident, Brooke Barnes, highlighted the need for a traffic light at the intersection of 1100 West and Lakeview Parkway to help manage the flow of vehicles entering and exiting the Walmart parking lot. Another resident, Chrissy Sorden, called for more thorough traffic studies to ensure the safety of the neighborhood, especially given the proximity of new residential developments.

In response to these concerns, city officials discussed plans for pedestrian and bike access, including sidewalks and trails that would connect to existing pathways. David Day from Public Works assured attendees that any fuel tanks associated with the Walmart would be highly regulated to prevent environmental risks, addressing worries about the area's water table.
