Blue Sky Communities announces upcoming Central Park housing project and business developments

In a recent meeting of the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) held on February 28, 2025, in Tampa, significant updates were shared regarding ongoing developments in the Central Park area. The meeting highlighted the progress of various projects aimed at revitalizing the community and addressing the need for affordable housing.

Blue Sky Communities, an affordable housing developer based in Saint Petersburg, expressed gratitude for the support received from the CRA. They reported a successful ribbon-cutting ceremony for their latest project, the Adderley, which is now nearly fully leased. The company is also planning a new phase that will add 100 units dedicated to elderly residents, emphasizing their commitment to community engagement and support.

Thomas Murphy, chair of the Central Park Community Advisory Committee (CAC), provided an overview of the transformation within the Central Park boundaries. Once dominated by vacant land from the former Central Park housing projects, the area is now seeing a surge in new businesses. Notable upcoming establishments include a medical office, a boutique grocery store, and a hotel, alongside the anticipated Tampa Black History Museum, set to open in 2026. This museum will offer educational programs and cultural activities, marking a significant addition to the community's resources.

Murphy also highlighted existing businesses that are thriving, such as Meacham Farm, which not only provides fresh produce but also engages the community through educational programs. Other local businesses mentioned include Dojo Bread Company, the Robert Saunders Library, and Urban Luxe at Tampa Park, which collectively contribute to the area's economic revitalization.

Despite the positive developments, there are challenges in attracting businesses to available commercial spaces. The CRA board discussed the need for strategic efforts to fill these spaces, particularly those that have remained vacant for extended periods. The housing authority's guidelines on tenant selection were noted as a potential barrier to attracting diverse businesses.

The meeting concluded with a sense of optimism about the ongoing changes in Central Park, though it also underscored the need for continued efforts to ensure that the area fully realizes its potential as a vibrant community hub. As the CRA moves forward, the focus will remain on fostering economic growth and enhancing the quality of life for residents in the region.
