East Providence proposes two monument signs amid zoning variance discussions

The East Providence Waterfront Commission held a hearing on January 13, 2025, to discuss a proposed signage variance for a new development along Veterans Memorial Parkway. The meeting focused on the need for two monument signs to enhance visibility for motorists, given the unique layout of the property and the existing zoning regulations.

The presentation outlined that the design guidelines for the Medicom and Subdistrict limit signage to vehicular entrances and prohibit internal illumination. However, the developers argued that the property's 100-foot buffer from the parkway necessitates signage to inform drivers about the development, as the buildings are set back and not visible from the roadway. They proposed one sign at the rotary for southbound traffic and another at a right-turn entrance for northbound traffic, both designed to meet the aesthetic standards of the area.

The proposed signs would reach heights of 12 and 21 feet, respectively, and would incorporate materials consistent with the town center's design. The developers emphasized that the signage is essential for marketing purposes and is in line with industry standards for retail developments.

Public comments during the meeting raised concerns about the size of the proposed signs. Dan Bodwin, a local resident and member of Keep Metacomet Green, expressed opposition to the height of the signs, arguing that they would set a precedent for future developments along the parkway. He highlighted the importance of maintaining the parkway's character and consistency in signage, noting that the proposed signs would be significantly larger than any existing signage in the area.
