The Annapolis Environmental Matters Committee convened on March 13, 2025, to discuss significant advancements in the city’s public transportation and sustainability initiatives. A key highlight of the meeting was the update on the introduction of electric buses, which marks a pivotal step towards greener public transit options for residents.
Director of Transportation Marcus Moore announced that the city is preparing to unveil two new electric buses, with the first set to be wrapped and ready for a press conference scheduled for March 27. These 30-foot buses, which will be put into service on March 31, are designed to accommodate 24 passengers and have an operational range of 58 miles. The buses will be integrated into existing routes, including the red, green, brown, and state shuttle lines, enhancing the city’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable transportation.

Moore indicated that approximately 10 to 12 shelters have been identified as suitable candidates for this eco-friendly upgrade. The initiative aims to improve urban biodiversity and provide additional benefits such as stormwater management. However, not all bus shelters are owned by the city, as some were established through partnerships with advertising companies. The committee plans to revisit this topic next month to finalize recommendations for the green roof project.
The discussions reflect Annapolis's ongoing efforts to enhance public transportation while prioritizing environmental sustainability. As the city moves forward with these initiatives, residents can expect improved transit options that align with broader community goals of reducing environmental impact and promoting green infrastructure.
