School Board approves Fat Beam Fiber contract for elementary internet upgrade

The Sweet Home School District 55 Board made significant strides in enhancing educational resources during their February 12, 2025, meeting, particularly through a new internet service contract aimed at upgrading connectivity for elementary schools. Kevin, the district's financial officer, reported that year-to-date spending for the general fund has increased by over $949,000 compared to last year, primarily due to more filled positions and higher salary and benefits costs. Despite these increases, he assured the board that the district remains on track with its overall budget.

The new internet service is expected to significantly enhance the educational experience for students, with speeds increasing from 200 megabits per second to a maximum of 85 gigabits per second. This upgrade is crucial as it will support the growing use of technology in classrooms, including Chromebooks and online resources. The project will be funded through a combination of state matching grants and E-rate funding, which covers 80% of the service costs, ensuring minimal financial impact on the district.
