Cromwell Public Schools proposes $40.5M budget focused on student services and equity

The Cromwell Board of Education meeting on January 28, 2025, highlighted a significant budget proposal for the upcoming school year, with a focus on enhancing educational services and addressing the needs of students. The proposed budget stands at $40,516,219, reflecting an increase of $2,225,975, or approximately 5.81%.

Central to the discussion was the commitment to prioritize student needs, with a mission to ensure equitable access to effective education. Superintendent Dr. Macri emphasized that the district's goals include improving academic performance, supporting K-5 reading and 3-5 math initiatives, and developing a STEAM-driven curriculum in the new middle school.

A major driver of the budget increase is attributed to salaries and benefits, which account for about 75% of the total budget. The district anticipates a salary increase of over $1.2 million, driven by contractual obligations and a competitive hiring market for teachers. Additionally, health insurance costs, initially projected to rise by 17%, have been revised down to a 7% increase, providing some financial relief.

The meeting also addressed the management of special education costs, with a strategic decision to separate tuition and service expenses to better track and control spending. Notably, a decrease in transportation costs for homeless students was reported, as the number of affected students has declined significantly.

As the district prepares for the next school year, the proposed budget aligns with its mission to place students first, ensuring that educational quality and support services remain a top priority. The Board will continue to refine the budget and engage with the community for feedback before final approval.
