Empower expands high-speed broadband access in Brunswick County with federal funding

Brunswick County is making significant strides in expanding high-speed broadband access, with recent updates highlighting the impact of various telecommunications initiatives. During the Board of Supervisors Regular Monthly Meeting on February 19, 2025, officials reported on the successful rollout of broadband services across the southern portion of the county, thanks to multiple grants and partnerships.

The county has benefited from three Virginia telecommunications initiative grants awarded in 2022, 2023, and 2024, which collectively aim to connect over 23,000 addresses across the region. Specifically, Brunswick County has seen 2,836 locations directly impacted, with the potential to serve between 12,000 to 15,000 residents. This expansion is crucial for enhancing connectivity in underserved areas, particularly as the demand for reliable internet grows.

Empower, the service provider involved, recently celebrated a milestone of over 7,000 connected customers in the region, showcasing the effectiveness of the fiber infrastructure that has been developed. The meeting also highlighted the collaboration with Dominion Virginia Power, which has allowed for the use of 18 miles of additional fiber to extend service further into the community.

Looking ahead, the county is preparing to apply for funding through the Broadband Equity and Deployment (BEAD) program, which aims to further enhance broadband access. The officials emphasized the importance of utilizing existing infrastructure to reach additional underserved areas, particularly in the southern part of the county.
