Eastern Municipal Water District celebrates 75th anniversary and unveils growth plans

During the City Council Study Session on February 11, 2025, the Eastern Municipal Water District (EMWD) presented a comprehensive overview of its operations and future plans, highlighting its critical role in serving the rapidly growing population of Moreno Valley and surrounding areas. Celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, EMWD is proud to be the sixth largest water retailer in California, serving approximately one million residents across 682 square miles.

The presentation emphasized the agency's commitment to infrastructure improvement, with a planned investment of $785 million over the next five years. This investment is crucial as the region continues to grow, with EMWD currently operating at only 43% capacity. The agency's diverse water supply portfolio includes imported water from the State Water Project and Colorado River, as well as local sources such as groundwater and a brackish desalination plant. This variety not only ensures a reliable water supply but also helps keep costs manageable for residents.

A significant focus of the meeting was on water conservation efforts. EMWD has reported a 50% reduction in per capita water consumption among its customers, thanks to initiatives promoting drought-tolerant landscaping and low-flow devices. The agency is also a leader in recycled water usage, which helps reduce reliance on more expensive imported water.

In light of recent wildfires in California, EMWD addressed concerns about fire resiliency. The agency has implemented measures to ensure a reliable water supply during emergencies, including maintaining full water tanks and conducting regular checks on fire hydrants in high-risk areas. During recent power outages, EMWD successfully deployed generators to maintain operations, ensuring that all facilities remained functional and capable of supporting firefighting efforts.

As the meeting concluded, EMWD representatives invited city council members to participate in the upcoming anniversary celebration in October, signaling a commitment to community engagement and collaboration as they continue to adapt to the needs of a growing population. The discussions underscored the importance of proactive planning and investment in water infrastructure to support the future of Moreno Valley and its residents.
