Val Early updates Crescent City on South Coast Community Aquatics winter pool project

The City Council meeting on February 12, 2025, featured a significant update from Val Early of South Coast Community Aquatics regarding the winter pool pilot project in collaboration with Crescent City. Early expressed gratitude for the support received from city staff, highlighting their efforts in managing schedules and facilitating operations.

Since the pool opened on December 1, 2024, it has welcomed 1,963 visitors, not including those participating in recently initiated swimming lessons. The pool operates approximately six hours a day during the week and longer on weekends, offering limited programming but receiving positive community feedback.

Financially, the project has exceeded initial expectations, with over $14,000 raised, surpassing the $10,000 target. However, Early noted challenges with rising propane costs, which have reached over $29,000, contributing to total expenses of around $32,000. Despite these hurdles, Early reported a successful experience thus far and promised a comprehensive report at the season's end.

Looking ahead, a recertification class for lifeguards is scheduled for March 1, ensuring readiness for the upcoming summer season. Early concluded by emphasizing the importance of the pool to the community, noting its consistent temperature of 85 degrees, which has made it a popular destination regardless of weather conditions. The meeting underscored the collaborative efforts between South Coast Community Aquatics, Crescent City, and local partners to enhance aquatic programming and accessibility for underprivileged children.
