Kodiak Borough Manager outlines trail improvements and hazard mitigation plan updates

The Kodiak Island Borough Assembly held a work session on March 13, 2025, addressing several key agenda items and updates relevant to the community. The meeting began with a discussion regarding contract number FY2025-49 for the KFRC pump assembly replacements. It was decided to delay this contract until further information about alternatives could be gathered, resulting in its removal from the agenda.

Following this, the borough manager provided updates on various initiatives. Notably, an MOU is being developed with the Island Trails Network to facilitate trail improvements on borough property. Additionally, a briefing on Mount Spur indicated a 50% risk of eruption, a situation that has remained consistent since October. The community is encouraged to prepare for emergencies, with resources available on a new Facebook page dedicated to emergency services.

In terms of staffing, the borough is currently conducting interviews for various positions, including a temporary laborer and a full-time secretary for the community development department. The assembly also discussed the upcoming foreclosure process, with notices being published and lien documents prepared for properties with delinquent amounts.

The Planning and Zoning Commission held a work session focusing on training and code amendments related to pet issues and assisted living facilities. Upcoming meetings are scheduled for May and June to address these amendments.

The session concluded with an announcement of a public forum on March 25, aimed at gathering community input on the use of borough buildings. The assembly plans to continue its discussions on departmental budgets in the next work session, scheduled for March 27, 2025.
