University of Maine System enhances internships with Maine Geospatial Institute collaboration

The University of Maine System (UMS) is set to enhance student career readiness through a new internship initiative, as discussed during the Board of Trustees meeting on March 10, 2025. This program aims to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world experience, providing students with valuable opportunities to engage in meaningful projects across various sectors.

The initiative, part of the UMS Transforms program, focuses on experiential learning, particularly through internships that connect students with employers in Maine. Vice Chancellor D'Orsay highlighted the importance of these internships, noting that they not only benefit students but also meet critical needs within the community. The program is supported by a cost-sharing model involving employers and state funding, ensuring sustainability beyond initial grants.

Grace Garland, the UMS Transforms program director, emphasized that the internship program aligns with UMS's commitment to student success and retention. By offering tailored academic resources and fostering relevant learning opportunities, the initiative aims to empower students to thrive academically and transition successfully into their careers.

Eileen Morin, program coordinator for the Maine Geospatial Institute (MGI), shared success stories from the previous summer's internship program, which included 15 students working on significant projects for various Maine organizations. These projects ranged from environmental mapping to analyzing local development plans, showcasing the practical impact of student contributions.

Looking ahead, the program has already attracted interest from over 50 students within the UMS for the upcoming summer, indicating a strong demand for these opportunities. The initiative not only prepares students for future careers but also strengthens partnerships with local organizations, enhancing community engagement.

As UMS continues to prioritize experiential learning, the internship program stands as a testament to its commitment to fostering student success and addressing workforce needs in Maine.
