St John's Community Health celebrates 60 years of dedicated service in South LA

In a heartfelt gathering at Los Angeles City Hall, city council members celebrated the 60th anniversary of St. John's Community Health, a beacon of hope and care for underserved communities in South Los Angeles. Council members praised St. John's for its unwavering commitment to the community, noting its extensive efforts in delivering COVID testing and vaccinations to families in need. The organization, which began as a single-room pediatric clinic, has grown into one of the largest networks of federally qualified health centers in Southern California, now operating 24 health centers and four mobile clinics.

Jim Manja, CEO of St. John's, spoke passionately about the organization's mission to address not just medical needs but also the root causes of health disparities, including poverty and racism. He emphasized the importance of their various programs, such as street medicine and support for marginalized groups, including a significant initiative for Black maternal health. Manja's remarks underscored the challenges faced by community health centers, particularly in light of funding cuts, but reaffirmed their commitment to fight for healthcare as a human right.

Kiana Purifoy, a participant in the Committed to Black Wellness and Health program, expressed gratitude for the support she received during her postpartum journey, highlighting the emotional and mental challenges faced by new mothers.

The meeting concluded with a collective acknowledgment of St. John's dedication to serving the most vulnerable populations in Los Angeles. As the organization looks to the future, it aims to continue its legacy of compassion and innovation, ensuring that every individual receives the care they deserve.
