Des Moines residents can look forward to an exciting boating season in 2025, as the Des Moines Yacht Club prepares for a series of community-focused events. During the recent City Council meeting, the club's Commodore provided an update on their plans, highlighting their commitment to safe boating and community engagement since their establishment in 1957.

The yacht club, which boasts over 300 members, has a strong history of supporting local initiatives. Last year, they contributed more than $4,500 to various organizations, including scholarships for Mount Rainier High School students. This year, they will award four scholarships of $1,000 each, continuing their tradition of investing in the community's youth.

Key events on the yacht club's calendar include the 26th Annual Marine Swap Meet on March 15, which is expected to attract hundreds of boaters from across the region. This event not only promotes boating but also raises funds for local scholarships and nonprofit organizations. Additionally, the club will participate in the Daffodil Boat Parade on April 19, showcasing their decorated boat and competing for awards, as they have done successfully in previous years.

A highlight of the season will be the South Sound Opening Day for boating on May 10, themed "Pirates of the South Sound." This public event will feature a formal ceremony, a city proclamation, and the traditional blessing of the fleet, aimed at promoting Des Moines as a premier boating destination.

The yacht club's activities will also include participation in the July 4 celebrations and the Des Moines Waterland festival, further enhancing community spirit and engagement.
