Lorain County dog warden proposes new strategies to reduce kennel population

During the recent Lorain County Commissioners' Board Meeting, the pressing issue of overcrowding at the county dog kennel was a focal point of discussion. With the kennel consistently at capacity, new Dog Warden Andy Laubenthal provided an update on the current situation and proposed strategies to address the ongoing challenge.

Laubenthal reported that the kennel, which has 28 full-size cages, is currently housing 41 dogs, leading to some animals being placed in smaller, temporary cages that are not ideal for their well-being. This overcrowding has been a persistent issue, with the kennel almost always full. Laubenthal noted that over the past six weeks, the average dog population has been 34, highlighting the urgent need for solutions.

In an effort to alleviate the situation, the board previously suspended adoption fees from August to October last year to encourage quicker adoptions. However, Laubenthal shared that this initiative did not significantly impact the number of dogs leaving the kennel. During the fee suspension period, 99 dogs were discharged, which is comparable to previous years when fees were in place.

Recognizing the limited effectiveness of fee reductions on adoption rates, Laubenthal suggested exploring the possibility of lowering redemption fees for owners reclaiming lost pets. He emphasized that many dogs in the kennel have owners who may have lost them due to various circumstances. By reducing the financial barrier for owners wishing to reclaim their pets, the kennel hopes to reunite more dogs with their families.

Laubenthal expressed a commitment to finding innovative solutions to improve the situation and ultimately secure permanent homes for the dogs.
