In a vibrant celebration of women's contributions to Los Angeles, the City Council meeting on March 14, 2025, honored trailblazing women who have made significant impacts in their communities. The highlight of the event was the recognition of Ruth Lansford, a 95-year-old environmental champion and founder of Friends of Biona Wetlands. Despite her absence, her legacy was celebrated by Scott Culbertson, the current executive director of the organization she founded.
Ruth's journey began in the 1960s when she moved to Playa Del Rey and discovered the Biona Wetlands, a vital ecosystem under threat from development. In 1978, she spearheaded a movement to protect this natural treasure, leading to a monumental legal victory in 1990 that preserved 340 acres of wetlands. Her relentless advocacy continued until the state secured the remaining wetlands in 2003, ensuring their protection for future generations. Beyond her environmental work, Ruth also serves as vice president of the Obergan Medal of Honor Foundation, honoring the sacrifices of service members.
