Leawood's Planning Commission has taken a significant step towards enhancing educational facilities in the community by approving a proposal for the Barstow School to expand its campus. During the regular session on January 28, 2025, the commission reviewed plans for a new annex that will include three science classrooms, three general education classrooms, and a storm shelter, all designed to support middle and high school students.
The proposed annex aims to provide additional outdoor learning spaces, allowing students to engage in activities such as botany studies and science experiments in a green environment. This initiative aligns with the school's goal of fostering a comprehensive educational experience that incorporates outdoor learning.

The commission emphasized that outdoor activities would be limited to indoor events only, concluding by 11 PM to minimize disturbances to nearby residents.
The applicant, Jeff Schuessler from Pluribus Architectural Collaborative, highlighted the importance of creating accessible pathways between the new annex and the existing Idea Space building, ensuring seamless integration of the facilities. The design also includes a wrought iron-style fence for security around the green space, enhancing safety for students.
As the project moves forward, the Barstow School plans to utilize its existing transportation system to shuttle students between campuses, ensuring that the new facilities can accommodate the school's diverse educational programs. The commission's approval marks a pivotal moment for the Barstow School, promising to enrich the learning environment for students in Leawood.
