Chesapeake Bay Trust highlights funding needs for urban tree and climate programs

Annapolis is set to enhance its historic preservation efforts thanks to a recent funding request discussed during the Maryland General Assembly's Appropriations Committee meeting. The session highlighted the importance of maintaining and promoting the city’s historic landmarks, which attract over 200,000 visitors annually from around the globe. The funding will support the care of significant sites like the William Peca House and Garden, ensuring that these treasures remain accessible to the public.

The request emphasizes the critical role of state funding in preserving Maryland's heritage, with the organization leveraging state dollars through generated revenue. Despite facing challenges such as aging infrastructure and rising operational costs, the organization has made significant strides in its preservation efforts and has received a commendable four-star rating from Charity Navigator for its financial management.

In addition to historic preservation, the meeting also addressed environmental initiatives led by the Chesapeake Bay Trust. The Trust, established in 1985, has been instrumental in empowering local communities through grant-making, focusing on urban tree planting and climate action programs. The Urban Trees Program, part of a broader initiative to plant 5,000,000 trees, has already funded over 123 grants, creating jobs and supporting the planting of 74,000 trees.

The Trust's Climate Solutions Now Act has expanded its service programs for young adults, providing valuable job training and experience in environmental conservation. With increased funding, the program aims to double its capacity, reflecting a growing demand for such initiatives.
