Residents of Apache Junction will soon have the opportunity to enhance their desert landscapes with free plants, thanks to a collaborative initiative involving the AJ Water Department, Arizona Water Company, and the Boyce Thompson Arboretum. During the recent City Council meeting on March 4, 2025, officials emphasized the importance of spreading the word about this program, which aims to provide residents with plants that are well-suited for the local environment and require minimal water. Eligible participants must present a valid ID and a recent utility bill at the Arboretum to claim their plants.
In addition to the plant initiative, the council approved a significant resolution calling for a special election on November 4, 2025. This election will pose a crucial question to voters: Should the mayoral term be extended from two years to four years? The resolution, which passed unanimously, sets in motion the necessary preparations for the election, including coordination with county officials and the development of ballot language.
