Developers propose $23M market rate housing project in Auburn with public amenities

Cayuga County is gearing up for a significant housing development aimed at attracting young professionals and families, as discussed in the recent Cayuga County Legislature meeting. The proposed project, featuring 70 market-rate townhome-style apartments, is set to be located adjacent to Bloomfield Manor in Auburn. This initiative comes in response to a growing demand for quality housing from local employers, including the hospital and expanding industries in the area.

Carrie, a county representative, outlined the financial framework for the project, emphasizing that the county will act as the applicant for a grant to support essential infrastructure costs, such as water, sewer, and road improvements. The total project cost is estimated at $23 million, with the county seeking $1 million to cover these infrastructure expenses. Notably, the developer will reimburse the county for application fees and associated costs, resulting in a net-zero expense for the county.

The development promises high-quality amenities, including a clubhouse, pool, and dog park, catering to the needs of future residents. Tim Crowley, a representative from the development firm, highlighted the importance of such housing projects in fostering community growth and meeting the demands of local employers. The project is designed to include a mix of one, two, and three-bedroom units, with each apartment featuring individual entryways and garages.

As the county prepares to submit grant applications, officials are optimistic about securing funding from multiple sources, including the Northern Border Regional Commission. This collaborative effort aims to ensure that the project not only meets the housing needs of the community but also enhances the overall quality of life in Cayuga County. The legislature is expected to vote on the grant application resolution next month, marking a crucial step forward in this ambitious housing initiative.
